How to Download M3U8 Files for Local Playback
Download with Online Tools
The easiest way is to use our M3U8 to MP4 tool, which converts m3u8 to MP4 right in your browser and saves it locally — no software installation required.
Note: it only works with m3u8 sources that allow cross-origin access (CORS), and is best suited for short videos.
Download with FFmpeg
For more complex scenarios (long videos, encrypted streams), FFmpeg is recommended:
ffmpeg -i "https://example.com/index.m3u8" -c copy output.mp4
This command downloads all segments and remuxes them directly into an MP4 — fast and lossless. FFmpeg also supports downloading encrypted streams that come with a key.
Local Playback
Once downloaded, you can play the file locally with any of these players:
- VLC: open source and all-purpose, supporting almost every format.
- PotPlayer: a powerful player on Windows.
- Built-in system players: MP4 files usually play directly.
If you only downloaded the m3u8 playlist file itself, keep it in the same folder as its TS segments, then open the m3u8 file with VLC to play it.
